STAND for Children and Youth

Shield the Vulnerable

Shield the Vulnerable is dedicated to raising the awareness and prevention of the mistreatment of the vulnerable. We work hard to accomplish this goal by training young people and adults about abuse, neglect, predators, bullying, boundaries, respect, and the perils of cyberspace.

ShieldTheVulnerable.org

Thank you for serving as a volunteer at St. Jane Frances Parish. As you know, St. Jane Frances and the Archdiocese of Baltimore have a commitment to maintaining the trust of the faithful by providing our children and youth with safe environments characterized by healthy relationships. With our longstanding commitment in mind, all parishes and archdiocesan Catholic Schools will be using Shield the Vulnerable, a new compliance management system that will allow all parishes and schools to facilitate compliance with archdiocesan child protection requirements for all volunteers who work with minors, employees, and clergy.

Non-Substantial Contact Volunteers:

Some volunteer positions in our parish have no contact or nonsubstantial contact with minors. If you are new or were screened prior to 2009 for those positions, you may only be required to complete the following:

  1. All Volunteers must register as a St. Jane Frances Parish volunteer at www.shieldthevulnerable.org.
    • Organization: select: "Catholic Dioceses" and then "Baltimore Archdiocese."
    • Provide demographic information, including contact information.
    • Create a login-ID and password.
    • Select your "Affiliation" as "Volunteer without substantial contact."
  2. You are not required to undergo a criminal history screening or complete safe environment (Protect the Children: STAND) training.
  3. Review recently revised Code of Conduct for Church Personnel in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
  4. Review A Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children & Youth.

Substantial Contact Volunteers
(new or started prior to 2009):

All volunteers, ages 18 and over, for positions with substantial contact with minors must complete the steps noted below which may allow you to also volunteer for temporary positions elsewhere in the archdiocese. Particular Covered Entities may have additional requirements for volunteers to complete before they are able to begin serving.

As a new or returning volunteer trained prior to 2009, please:

    • Because you are working with children, select your "Affiliation" as "Volunteer with substantial contact."
  2. Once you have registered, you will be asked for the date of your last criminal history screening. If you have been screened within the last five years, you should not be rescreened at this time.
  3. ShieldtheVulnerable.org will direct you in how to complete the revised Online Training Course.
  4. Review recently revised Code of Conduct for Church Personnel in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
  5. Review recently revised A Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children & Youth.

Note: The Code of Conduct for Church Personnel in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and A Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children and Youth were recently revised (Aug. 2014). The original versions of these landmark documents were introduced over a decade ago.

Substantial Contact Volunteers
(started 2010 thru 2014):

As a returning volunteer who started after 2009, please:

    • Because you are working with children, select your "Affiliation" as "Volunteer with substantial contact."
  2. Because you have completed a criminal history for the Archdiocese of Baltimore within the last five years, you should not be rescreened at this time.
  3. Since you have completed Protect the Children: STAND training within the last 5 years, you are not required to be retrained until your criminal history screening is renewed.
  4. Review recently revised Code of Conduct for Church Personnel in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
  5. Review recently revised A Statement of Policy for the Protection of Children & Youth.
